The Fritz Family Fellowship is a unique program that is designed to be interdisciplinary from the ground up. Each research project is co-designed and mentored by faculty from at least two different parts of the campus, building multiple disciplines into the foundation of the research. Building on expertise from across Tech & Society, the Fritz Family Fellowship aims to cultivate the next generation of leaders with expertise in the social impacts of technology, and build a network of public interest technologists who learn from and support each other’s work.

The goal of the Fritz Family Fellowship is to encourage collaboration between programs within the Tech & Society Initiative at the cutting-edge of the social impacts of technology. For the current and upcoming academic years, the Fritz Family generously provided support for *new* interdisciplinary research projects lead by Tech & Society faculty and staff with the research done by Georgetown University student Fritz Fellows. These projects and fellows will run in parallel with the current Fritz Fellows cohort. This funding is available for collaborative faculty research around several key thematic areas of Tech & Society Initiative inquiry, including:
Technology Governance: As technology facilitates the expansion of social, economic, and political horizons, boundless opportunity must be tempered with thoughtful and humane constraint, guided by the values and principles that sustain democracy and human rights. AI Ethics: AI is a transformative technology. The use of AI carries immense potential to improve people’s lives, but also threatens significant societal disruption, workforce displacement, and the potential to undermine justice and democracy in our society. How can these concerns be addressed in technology, law, and societal responses? Cybersecurity and Society: Cybersecurity is a critical necessity for protecting human rights, democracy, national security, and the digital economy. It is also an area that is destabilized by quickly emerging AI models, creating countless questions about how technology and law alike should respond. Digital Wellbeing: New digital tools and platforms are transforming how we live, work, and relate to each other. Adjusting to these techno-realities requires a deep understanding of how they operate, an understanding of how people are affected, and recommendations for how society should respond. Family Tech Ethics: New technologies from chatbots and location tracking to companion technologies for the elderly are reconfiguring family life. What is the social, cultural, and intergenerational impact of these technologies and how should we help shape and regulate these artificial intelligences?
